They look as though they should be Mannered and Assay, but I don't know why....
17a Mannerly - man nearly minus 'a'
17a. mannered, man + neared without the a.
lead to rhyme with bead. so Gas without the 'g' and say = for example

Think it will be 'mannerly. The answer is polite. Fellow = man. More or less = nearly. Shed or lose the a MAN NERLY
