How do I open these damn grey boxes in emails?!?

Ok so I'm useless - guilty as accused
But try as I might I cannot open these grey boxes in emails that have pictures in them!
"Really funny" it says
"You must see this!" it proclaims.
Well, perhaps I'd laugh if I could see what's in them!!
grrr..........
please save my sanity
(I use Hotmail btw if that has any bearing on it)

Hotmail? Please excuse us while we fall about laughing!

It seems to be a common problem in the web-based version of Hotmail, but using a proper mail client can overcome the problem:
