17 Across. Tidy old finance chancellor, in short - get shot! (5) do-ce
Am considering 'douce' and 'dolce' - but can't settle on which. As this is the last answer I've to get, I'd welcome other people's thoughts. Thanks.

The wordplay suggests DO (tidy) + Old + C.E., and 'dooce' means to get fired from one's job (get shot?), although I can only confirm that 'dooce' is a newish bit of internet slang.

Yes, dr b, that sounds far better than my reasoning - 'dooce' it is!
Dooce is in Chambers and was coined in the US in 1975.
Although the blogger known as Dooce was born in 1975, the word appears to have been coined well after that:

I have been in the US since 1960 and have never heard the word before.
My apologies. The woman who coined the word was BORN in 1975. I simply misread the words in Chambers.
