Probably "Hooked On Clasics" by Louis Clark and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. They did dozens of these medleys, but that was the best-known one. There's a "Best Of Hooked On Classics" CD available which includes this and some of the other medleys.
that sounds a bit like "Kimera - the lost o?era" to me. I loved it when I was a kid.
Also Waldo de Los Rios - Symphonies for the 70's (now done by his son?). Some was used by the BBC? Stays abit closer to the classical but still with a beat. Beethoven's 9th (Ode To Joy) is my favourite.

I remember one called classical gas

I'm pretty sure Jen hit it with "Hooked on Classics."
'Stars on 45' used to do loads of covers; they may have murdered enough pop hits that they turned to classical...
it might be son of my father by chicory tip
