I got told off for peeing in the swimming pool once. Fair enough really as it was from the 2nd diving board (boom boom).
Yup, they do. That chlorine smell in the pool isn't actually the chlorine in the water - it's chloramines, which are produced when wee reacts with chlorine. Chloramines are also what make your eyes sting. Yeesh.

But what about the fact that you'll be swimming in your own and other people's urine?? Why does that not matter?
I know it's pish isn't it! yeah everyone seems to have a "someone peed in the pool" story.....i suppose people don't seem overly fussy because they now the water is treated and when you take into account the volume of water in the pool and the average amount of discharge it going to be very diluteed.....not that this makes it any more or any less right.
Don't they put something in the water now which turns bright green or blue when the wee hits it?
I was talking with a pool attendant once a few years ago. She said that basically though no on ewill admit to doing it, the vast majority of swimmers will urinate in the pool, either voluntarily or involuntarily. This said when you consider the size of the bladder to the volume of water in the pool already, then the concentration of urine to water is immensely small (an oxymoron?). The chlorine is added as an antiseptic to counter the urine, but as mentioned previosuly, there's very little bacteria in urine anyway. There are certain pools in the UK where they add dyes to deter people from weeing in the pool, but not in all pools. You think this all sounds horrible swimming in urine water? then consider what we chuck into the sea, next time you go for a swim in there - personally i won't swim anywhere in the UK coastal areas except devon/cornwall, or the south west of Wales, all of which receive relatively clean atlantic waters

NickleArse - no, they don't. But it's a useful story to scare kids off from doing it!
The pee is usually filtered through old Elastoplasts and old peoples false teeth
