GRRRRRR
why is the standard answer to questions "google it"?
I know that google is a search engine thanks, and may or may not have already used it, but want opinions, or ideas, or i may not have understood the answers i got. I see the answerbank as a search engine too and don't see google as superior necessarily. If i want straight answers to q's i might well go there, but sometimes i want people to say "aha, the answer to your question is blah blah blah, but had you also thought about this that and the other"
so there you go!

LOL, tiggs...

they are the ones that ask for the answers to be no more than 1500 words and no less than 1200 and can you include links to your references.
People who say 'google it' should either be ignored, or told to p1ss off.
It's a question and answer site. People can ask what they want.

Sometimes I've answered a question and then pointed out that it took me a few seconds to find on Google, but I wouldn't say 'If you want the answer go off and Google it'. If you object to the question, report it or ignore it.
This is a good point!

Please report when users are not even trying to be useful and we'll "tidy" - we like the site to be taken "seriously" in most sections, and as such, pathetic answers like "Google it" or "Just look it up" aren't helping anyone.

All the best,

Spare Ed
It would be handy if they could at least use the search facility on the site though
Some while ago, there used to be a page where, after composing your question, and prior to submitting, it would give you a list of similar questions and ask if you wished to proceed or if one of these 'previously asked' would satisfy your requirements.

Mind you, at that time, the 'search' facility was a little erm.........variable.
We will be bringing back the preview facility in the future versions of AB.

All the best,

at least google never tells me to "answewrbank it"!
Sometimes saying Google it is the right answer though.

A couple of days ago someone asked a question about phone numbers. The answer was to google them, which a few of us mentioned. Although we also did it for him on the occasion.
mmm let me google that for you

Ed. There are of course instances when a question may be asked on Answerbank and someone with 'specialist' knowledge gives an answer. The questioner is not then referred to Google it. One that comes to mind was a recent Best Data Plan Sim/Contract query. Advice was given but unfortunately no appreciation or acknowledgement was forthcoming. ‘Why do I bother?’ comes to mind.
This is my pet hate.....people answer questions with Googled answers (blatantly) and links which when followed up show long lists of e.g diseases which even when I read them scare the hell out of me.

Why not answer the question in a manner that most people can understand and and if they want to go into the subject in greater depth the...GOOGLE IT!
You didn't answer the question though, sir.prize, you emailed the ed.

If everyone emailed their answers to the OPs this site would cease to exist.
I totally agree sir.prize. I answered a question about AOL and asked if the poster would like a telephone number I had. He said he would so I got up out of my chair and rifled through my files,(box), and found the number. I posted it and asked to let us know how he got on..... Nothing, not even a thank you.
I've actually gone off site and googled it and came back on with the answer, so actualy done the work for the person involved. It is so easy!!
its just baffles me, when its quicker to google than post a question. but each to their own i suppose
Chuck - yes you are right, I did email the Ed with a suggestion to resolve his query, rather than post it on his thread. The reason for that was the info I provided was direct advertising, which Answerbank rules prohibit. I did post on Ed's thread to say I had emailed him, but he did not respond. Neither did he reply to my email. Well, there you go.
chrissa - yes I know the frustrations of searching for answers to help others, and then being totally ignored; specifically in the Quizzes and Puzzles category:

In future, my answer to him will be 'Why don't you Google it?'.
'googling it' is sometimes not as simple as it seems, it's all about interpreting the OP, entering the correct key words in the google search and then reading the list of results and checking that the answer you select does in fact answer the OP, sometimes it doesn't sometimes it does. It's all about whether the OP is the right question in the first place,
Wow sir.prize. With those stats why does he bother asking questions. He must be a very lonely man.
Very true chrissa, but 'lonely' isn't the adjective I would use.
I don't know, why don't you goggle it?
