You might want to enlighten us to what sort of phone, not a lot of help suggesting android apps if you have an iphone, or vice versa.

How would you access your phone to start the app if it were stolen? You could try ringing it and see if anybody answers.

There are apps that run in the background automatically and respond to a text sent to the phone causing it either to make a loud noise (even if the phones on silent) or reply with the location of the phone taken from the GPS. one such app is mydroid for android.
