My cat's miaow sounds funny ... hoarse ... could he have a sore throat ? He seems fine otherwise.

For how long? If it's just a very recent think like a day or so and he is otherwise fine and happy then he is probably just having a hoarse moment.
If it carries on for longer then a couple of days and especially if he seems otherwise unwell or unhappy then get him checked out, you could always ring the vet for advice.
Just make sure he has lots of water available.
