Does anyone know if you can dye a black dress a different colour? i.e. midnight blue?

Almost definitely not I'm afraid.

My guess is that you'd need to bleach out the original colour first, and then hope the threads still hold together ?

Probably depends on the material. Some types can be lightened before dying a different colour. Always easier to go darker.
