'It's not always prudent to call things the way you see them.' Is this a well-known phrase? Does anybody know who first said it?

What's the gain in insulting someone for no reason? Example: just about to go out for the day/ night, 'Does my bum look big in this?' the answer would be 'No!' Instead of 'It looks big, you should diet' Sometimes necessary to say little white lies; first used more than 900 years ago.
