my son thinks i could get rid of an old 28 inch widescreen TV by giving it away to charity - has anyone any ideas how to do this? Apparently they are taken out to third world countries? Any ideas?

UK sets work on 230V at 50Hz. Many overseas countries have different power supplies. Further, the UK uses the PAL-I system of TV transmission, which (apart from the British Isles) is only used in Angola, Botswana, Gambia, Hong Kong, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zanzibar. Lastly the frequencies used by other countries differ from those in the UK and might not be accessible by tuners on UK sets.
So a TV set made for the UK market is unlikely to work in any other country unless it has the same voltage and frequency for the electrical supply, the same allocation of frequencies for TV signals and also uses the PAL-I system of transmission.
If the set is in good working order, donate it to the British Heart Foundation, who have 'Furniture & Electrical Stores' across the UK.
Alternatively sell in your local Free-ads paper or join Freecycle to give it away.
Failing that, take it to your local recycling centre.
