vanishing toolbars

Just switched on my laptop and noticed my favourites bar and google toolbar had vanished. I pointed the curser in the tiny gap at the top of the screen and both bars came back, but if I moved the curser away from the top of the screen they vanished again. What can I do? Any help appreciated.
