Hi there I've just bought a new hamster and my old one does not like him at all the old hamster (jane) was ok with the new hamster (tarzan) but I was woken up last night by the most horrific squealing and growling and the cage was shaking as jane was obviously going for tarzans neck, anyway I've separated them and put tarzan in an empty quality street tin for the moment, is there anything I can give to jane to make her less aggressive as I really would hate to see tarzan go.

They're not Syrian hamsters are they as thay have to live alone or they will fight?
Hamsters are solitar creatures who only get together to mate.They will fight to the death if put together under any other circumstances.

No prudie both are white russian dwarf hamsters.
They are? My friend has 6 colombian hamsters and they all live in the same cage and don't fight.
They would be the Columbian gay hamster variety, then.
Either that, or they're stoned.
Hamsters should ber kept alone except for mateing!!

I'm not sure whether that's them or not albags. Stoned? As in stones in their cages? Well not yet but they do have a wheel for exercise. A house with bedding inside for sleeping in, Wood shavings to line the cage and a water bottle and a food bowl.

haha very funny :-)
In simple language, separate them, or one will kill the other!

They have been separated chaffinch but I want to know what can I do to calm jane. Is there such thing as hamster sedatives?
Grow up, I expect the 18 means your age, so use it, don't divide it by half
It may have been a good idea to read up on hamster behaviour-before you got another one. Keep them separate.

It looks that way pastafreak. Thanks everyone for your help.
This maybe of some help;

It does say about play fighting but from what you describe above I think you are going to be needing to get another cage, sorry.
Are you planning on mating them? Only reason I ask is because of their names, I don't think it would be a good idea to do this if this is your intention, sorry if I have gotten hold of the wrong end of the stick.
poster now suspended...........
