I could never get my head around this, I always thought Greenwich was the world time datum so would be the first in everything.

No not at all, I've never sussed the datum line thingy, history saying all time is taken from it etc so can't see how other places have their day start before it!.

You're right Dagman, time does start at Greenwich but it has to stop after 24 hrs to come back to "zero". The wiggly dateline 180 degs. away is the result.
