As I see it:
To 'exhaust' is to 'tire', hence it's that spelling which you require. (It can also be the US spelling for the thing around the wheel, so it satisfies both criteria. 'Tyre' doesn't fit since it only satisfies one of the two definitions in the clue)
prefer TYRE . . . . other part of car, say/sounds like tire/exhaust

I would go for TYRE. (Sounds like exhaust)
I would say Tyre too.
Exhaust, say, means it sounds like exhaust ie tire , so the answer is part of car ie tyre
