I think it was "On Her Majestey's Secret Service..." or was that just the book -- I think I have got the title a bit wrong...

'Dr. No' made in 1962. I thought 'Casino Royale' was made before this, but according to IMDB it was made in '67.

It was definately 'Dr No', It was released in the UK on 5th October 1962 and on the 8th May in the USA. sddsddean was correct in saying that 'Casino Royale' was released in 1967.

PS. Sorry to disappoint any Bond fans, but Ursula Andress was not naked during the radiation cleansing sequence.

Also, contrary to popular belief, Sean Connery was not the first actor to play Agent 007. That distinction fell to an American actor called Barry Nelson, who played Bond in a one hour, 1954 US live television adaptation of 'Casino Royale'.

Also in the Mid 50's Bond was played on Radio by Bob Holeness, of Blockbusters fame!

To answer the original question I confirm that the first Bond film was Dr No. Casino Royal is not part of the generally accepted Bond series, It is a one off spoof.

The much later "Never say never again" is also not part of the series, essentially a remake of Thunderball by another production company.

Sorry to hijack your question soobet. I am a huge Bond fan, but I must say how disappointed I was with with 'A View to a Kill', I thought it seemed tired and lacked inspiration. This was apparent in the screenplay which borrows liberally from 'Goldfinger', the conference centre aboard the airship with the scale model of Silicon Valley was virtually a remake of the scenario with Mr Solo in 'Goldfinger'.

a view to a kill is the worst bond film in my opinion !

you might be interested to know that casino royale will also be the next bond film !

David Niven played the first James Bond in Casino Royale
