A Leak...But Where From?

There seems to be a leak UNDER my downstairs hall carpet. I first saw a wet patch last night and thought the dog had had an accident, then realised it was more extensive. It extends from the kitchen doorway, and about 6' down the hall. It is now about 18" wide, and does not extend as far as the wall. My kitchen hot tap drips occasionally during cold spells-but has not been too bad the past few days. Is this connected in any way?

You need to check if it is surface .. from source above floor, or coming up from floor. Dry it off and look for trace stains to the source.
If you have washable wallpaper water may be running down behind it from a leak within the wall and out onto the floor and underneath the carpet. This happened to us about five years ago, and we had to have the whole hall and stairwell and upstairs carpet renewed through the insurance and walls re-papered. Well worth having insurance.
This happened to me a while back and it was a leaky radiator pipe in my kitchen coming out into the hall, obviously depends on where yours in situated but worth checking?
