It says on the bottle The name `Tonic Wine` does not imply health giving or medicinal properties`. What I want to know is, how can it be therefore a tonic, and moreover, is it a pleasant taste, and, being type2 diabetic, ok to have an occasional tipple? Cheers.

you could call a nice cup of tea a tonic if you wanted, it just implies something that perks you up (maybe). My guess is they've called it a tonic wine for years and had to add the disclaimer when labelling regulations were tightened up.

Don't know whether it's ok for diabetics, sorry.

My wife has had Sanatogen on and off for many years , originally the one with the red cap with "added iron" but now the standard one with the yellow cap.
She says she feels better after a glass but whether that psycological or not because of the tonic in the title who knows and she finds the taste pleasing - but that is a matter of personal preference.
I know friends who swear in the restorative properties of Guinness and others in Gold Label !!!
Sanatogen tonic wine is an old product, at one time very popular with ladies of a certain age. It is a fortified wine along the lines of sherry and port. Other well-known brands are Wincarnis and Buckfast (very popular in Glasgow!). They are quite strong, so should be drunk in moderation. I don't think being type 2 diabetic will prevent someone from having the odd glass. I have the same condition and can drink for Engalnd, but I'm not on any medication.
One of the dictionary definitions for 'tonic' is ''Anything that invigorates physically, mentally, or morally''. I guess that includes Sanatogen.
As a type2 diabetic, I was informed that nothing is forbidden food/drink wise. All things in moderation and don't overdo processed sugar foodstuffs.

The only negative that I got was no grapefruit or grapefruit juice with Metformin
At 15% abv it is stronger than most wines. It is no more or less suitable for diabetics than any other strong red wine.
As a sickly young child I would be given a daily dose of Sanatogen (the powder, not the wine). This was mixed with milk into a thin paste (rather like cornflour) and drunk at a draught. I believe it was merely a concentrated form of protein called casein. It was advertised as a 'Nerve Tonic'.
Sounds repulsive to me!?
"
Sanatogen Tonic Wine was introduced 50 years ago, made by the traditional blending of full bodied Ruby British Wine with special 'Sanatogen' formula to produce the unique mellow flavour of Sanatogen Tonic Wine. The famous Sanatogen name is your guarantee of consistently high quality and value for money as Britain's most popular Tonic Wine. Sanatogen Tonic Wine 'with added iron' retains the delightful taste of the original product. So there are two ways to enjoy drinking the preferred Tonic Wine."

BTW "Ruby British Wine" is just another cover up name for cheap imported North African red.

Thank-you to all, I have today bought a bottle and find it pleasant, but not a taste I can say I really enjoy enough to buy more. To-morrow I intend to buy a Port that was tasted and thoroughly enjoyed on The Alan Tichmarch Show to-day @ £9.99 a bottle.
