Networking is a vast subject, and it depends what level you want to reach, have a look at the free study guides at http://cramsession.brainbuzz.com/ and you will see what I mean. Please post another question stating what sort of networking you are interested in and I will do my best to answer it.
The area I was looking in was designing, building and maintaining computer networks. There are courses available but, like you said, there are so many that I'm just looking where to start. So the beginning of networking. By the way, I changed my name.

First, apologies for taking so long to reply, I have just finished rebuilding my PC. On the subject of networking, start with linking to PCs at home, all that is needed is a network card for each PC, combo cards if you can get them. For cabling, either use bnc cable (available ready made), for two PCs you need one length of cable, two t-pieces and two 50 ohm terminators. This is the cheaper option. Alternatively use a hub and two lengths of rj45 cable, also available ready made, this is more expensive as hubs can be quite expensive so shop around. You now need to get the PCs to talk to each other. Like humans they need to share a common language or protocol. Now I need to know what version of Windows you are using to set up the networking components.
