i put veet hair removal on my legs today while i was wearing a very special ring. the ring is either silver or platinum and has cubic zirconia in it, it looks a bit like an eternity ring. i was very upset to find after washing my hands that the ring was tarnished on both edges, a blackish brown colour. what metal do you think it is and what do you think i should do to try and clean it? will it ever shine up again? maybe there is an antidote for hair removal cream as that is a bleach isnt it?

I had a silver braclet that I managed to tarnish on holiday one year - I think I took it to a jewellers to get it professionally cleaned and it came up as good as new.

i did think the ring was platinum but my wedding ring is platinum and i was wearing that at the same time and it is still shiny and perfect.
If it tarnished that quickly it is unlikely to be either material.
I got some on my ring once ... ruddy stung like hell! : )
The ring certainly isn't platinum, which wouldn't tarnish at all. Hair removal creams contain thioglycolates so a silver ring would tarnish because of a coating of silver sulphide; this would be removed by gentle use of a silver cleaner ( like Granny used for her silverware).
try scrunched tin foil in china mug, drop ring in & cover with boiling water - leave overnight,
Sounds like sterling silver, if you've got any silver polish that might bring it back.
For "tin" read "aluminium".
