Left this on by mistake and now the bottom is black. Whats the best way to remove the blakc burnt on layer? I have left it soaking in undiluted washing up liquid but it has hardly shifted it.

Make a paste with baking soda and scrub, scrub, scrub ...
Leave it overnight with a dishwasher tablet in it! works a treat....
not when its caramelised apple sauce it doesn't :-(

Will try the dishwasher tablet first, and let you know! Meant to add, this is not mine, it was at work (I'm a carer) and I need to get it clean and put back before anyone else notices!

Sorry - being thick here - presumably with a layer of water in as well as the dishwasher tablet? Hot or cold?
I was going to suggest chucking it in the bin (which is what I did the other week) but seeing as it's not yours then that's probably not an option!!!
Cover the bottom with cola and heat on the hob. Then rub with a cloth.

Personally, I think household bleach is as good as anything. I have used it for many many years. An egg cupful in a pint of hot water, leave to soak for a few hours and then get to work with a cloth and cream cleaner. ( Providing of course that one is sure the article is stainless steel and not polished aluminium.)

Best of luck....Ron

Will try all suggestions - its new, expensive and will definitely be missed if it goes missing!
For future reference, Lankeela, a detergent, such as washing up liquid, doesn't work on its own - it needs at least some water. It's a bit technical, but hopefully it's explained here...

Interesting.
hope by now you have got it clean but if not half a cup of washing powder and enough water to cover the burnt and boil keep doing it till it lifts it off you might need to change it several times if its very bad
One of those shredded metal type scouring pads, warm water and Cif (or similar) should do the job.

Oops - broken link.
Try again: http://www.worldofstock.com/slides/PHO2016.jpg
I'd go with the overnight soak with a dishwasher tablet mixed with water to cover the black. Failing that try oven pride or Mr Muscle oven cleaner.
I'm with AP on this one, soak the pan in warm soapy water, then get scrubbing with a pan scourer (the metal one) try cif too to help shift it.
A metal scouring pad will leave scratch marks which will then have to be polished out with 0000grade wire wool (yes 4zeros).
