Wrong side of a rainbow?

All my life, I have always seen a rainbow on my other side relative to the sun - if the sun was in the west, the rainbow in the east. The other morning with the sun low in the eastern sky, the sunlight was catching a cloud to the south east but higher in the sky. There was a quite clear rainbow arc of some 30 degrees coming from the cloud towards the north! So this time, the rainbow was between me and the sun! I have seen rainbows above waterfalls etc. but I have always been between the sun and the vapour cloud. This phenomenon was quite new to me, but it did not last very long.
