I have a Ford focus 2004 1.6L Automatic, which as started doing something peculiar just today - when put into reverse it judders backwards, and I have to brake really hard to stop it - there are no warnng lights on, the right amount of transmission fluid - it's had a 10,000 mile service about 6 weeks ago and passed it's MOT yesterday! Would any mechanically minded person know what is causing this please? Thank you.

I've been juddering going forward in the last couple of days, but then I realised that I was trying to pull away with my offside front tyre in a very large puddle - it think the car was trying to get a grip.

I don't think that my car's problem is quite that simple! It did it first reversing into a space in Tesco's, and then again into our drive, both which it usually manages perfectly. It also seems fine in drive.
It really needs scanning on WDS. (Ford dealer) Will read any faults in Auto Transmission ECU.
You 'could' also ask the dealer to check through the Technical Service Bulletins for you. Try workshop manager. Access is usually web now.
I used to look after Ford Transmissions .. specifically Focus and everything else. I can't remember any problems like this.
