At what time would it be reasonable to go round to the house next door and ask them to turn their music down? They know we have small children (as do they) and the music is just thumping through the wall. (OK - I am in an evil mood anyway so probably not being very reasonable tonight.) Thanks

Might just be a family gathering. If it keeps happening maybe ask them, jokingly (with a smile), if they had a good time last night. That should hint you could hear them.
If it's a one off I'd let it go, but if it happens a lot and you don't want to go round you could try my ex's trick. Whenever our neighbours had a loud and noisy night, he'd get up about 6am, turn the speakers to the adjoining wall and blast opera at them for a good few hours. They soon got the hint :)
As already said, if they're usually quiet turn a deaf ear. You've got an extra hour in bed tonight and there is no school tomorrow in any case.
Next time you bump in to them, ask them to let you know when they are having a party/making an evening of it, so you can prepare.
But as you say the youngest are sleeping I don't see there is a problem.

If you know your neighbours are having a late, loud night take the opportunity to make it a fun night for your family. Watch films together, or play Wii, have a buffet supper, assuming it isn't a school night.

One day your eldest will be old enough to want a late party.
