poppy?
sorry wrong thread.
I think it's Hoi Sin sauce with addition of five-spice powder - at least, that's what I do (but I'm not Chinese!).
Hoisin sauce is brownish red and probably similar to what you're seeking. You can buy it in any of the big supermarkets.

However the specialist Oriental food stores will sell you this, which might well be the exact product you require:

(There are lots of brands available).

bbq spareribs is red??
Gingejbee seems to be thinking along much the same lines as me. If you want to try his/her suggestion you can either add some Five Spice powder to Hoisin sauce or, easier, look in your local supermarket for this:

I don't think it was hoi sin gingejbee. Whats in the 5 spice? I like the look of the sauce in your link buenchico so will give that a try when I next pass a chinese supermarket.
Not sure whitebears what goes in the capital spare rib sauce?
Five- spice is :star anise, fennel, cloves, cinnamon and pepper.

I've never had star anise or fennel so I'll look into it. Doesn't `star Anise and fennel have a strong aniseed flavour?
