They give convents a bad name. Why do the dispicable practices happen in Ireland.

lol..... muhammed ali. You've trashed my serious thread. S'pose I'll visit Ireland and find out for myself.

The irish I meet down here seem naive and too willing to believe anything they're told.

Jay...if you think you'll find anything relating to the Magdalene Sisters you'll be wasting your time....

I suggest a nice trip to Clare Island....

Or The Rock of Cashel....

If you want to go to Dublin have a beer in Temple bar...then go to the Guinness factory. You'll get a free pint..!!!
can't quite remember the name of the association, but one exists in Ireland to try and get the Irish government to acknowledge and apologise for the treatment meted out to the people in the laundries.

A while ago in Dublin during some preparation work for a new building a graveyard was unearthed on the site of one of these places presided over by the nuns. No records exist of the names of the girls buried there and no nun from that place has even said that such practices ie the enforced imprisonment of these girls, ever took place there.....but in my experience, that is a typical nun for you..........berates you for not going to confession (when you live miles away from the nearest catholic church) calling me (a 7yr old at the time) a heathen and later that day strikes several pupils with a wooden ruler on their knuckles.........

the fear of god was litlerally that to us........fear

three cheers for organised religion......not!
I did read somewhere that what really spelt the death knell for the Magdalen convents was not any growing awareness of the girls' treatment or human rights, but the ability of more and more families to afford domestic washing machines.
I was dating someone who rented this dvd for our 2nd date.. actually, that was the last date!
One of the reasons might have been that many of the nuns were unwilling servants of God. Family pressure directed them towards a life in the cloister. They took their frustrations out on the children in their 'care'.

Wrong - all nuns and convents are not cruel places ime. Why in Ireland specifically?
