Should they outlaw Gambling?

We have seen hard drugs outlawed, tobacco almost outlawed, Drinking frowned upon, and they now try and control what we eat.
But something that causes much suffering, hardships and crime, yet they fail to take any measures to stop it, in fact they actually encourage it.
And this is 'Gambling' it's advertised on TV ie Bingo, Football Pools, etc. it is on the internet Poker, the state allows a national lottery, there are bookie's shops on all high-streets where one can bet on horse races, dog races and most sport' results.
Taking into account the hardship and troubles that those who try and get rich at a scratch of a card, a turn of a card, etc. and still spend even more money trying to get back the money that they have already lost

Yes I agree with most of what as been said, but I don't think some have given their answers much thought.

I think sandyRoe has got it about right.
Obviously some will still try and gamble it won't rub it out completely just as bringing back hanging wouldn't stop murders, but it would be a deterrent, just as making hard line drugs illegal, there are still many who still acquire some, but not everyone.
By banning gambling, ie no bingo, no poker on our screens, no lottery or scratch cards, no horse or dog tracks, no bookies shops, it would remove most of the chances of getting 'hooked' in the first place.

this could apply to anything though, some people enjoy gambling and it causes no problems, some people become addicted to a point of self destruction.
you could apply the same risks to drinking alcohol, eating junk food, exercising ect ect
there will always be people prone to addiction, they would be better improving services for people who suffer from addictions than banning gambling.

Unfortunately whatever your opinions on this you'll find, as the Americans have it's pretty much impossible to do.
The internet pretty much internationalises these things
How are you going to prevent people setting up gambling sites abroard and and Britons logging onto them and gambling?
Countries have a pretty poor sucess rate in trying to police the internet.
You could outlaw the TV advertising but you'd have a hard job stopping on-line advertising

When I first saw old git's parallel between gambling and murder I thought it was rather inappropriate but actually i think he may have stumbled on something.
Let's consider legalising, regulating and taxing murder.
Anyone who fancies a 'flutter' at murdering someone (as long as they're over 18 obviously) could go onto the official website.
There they will pay their fee plus a big wedge of tax of course to Mr Osbourne to help him afford the interest payments on all the money the previous government gave to his mates in The City.
Then they will be matched up with a Benefits Scrounger they can kill.
There would need to be rules about method, no excessive cruelty, not in front of children etc but I think it would work, raise public money and address the issue of Benefits Cheats often raised on AB. If a Labour Government ever gets in again (hard to imagine I know) they can keep the scheme going just swap Benefits Scroungers - sorry, long term claimants - for Stockmarket Spivs and Financial Speculators.
We need a slogan - how about 'You can make a killing' ?

In an ideal world perhaps, but this is not an ideal world, nor is it inhabited by ideal people.
There comes a time when regulations have to be introduced to help and protect those who for reasons only known to themselves, have very little if not any self-restrain.
Without laws, restrictions, etc even those who were capable of self restraint would soon join the ranks of the unruly mob

same as anything tho - you can addicted to everything, given the right scenario & personality ... are we going to ban shopping? plastic surgery? porn? people will always find themselves ways to distract themselves from the real world .... I agree with some of the later posts whereby it seems more of a problem due to slick advertising.
in addition - for online gambling - i just think there should be some limit, i know you can set this yourself, but it would be nice for the big companies to at least pretend to care.
I also dont agree with being able to use credit cards to gamble online - i have worked in banks previously and seen people blow thousands on gambling :( but ultimately, responsibilty lies with the consumer
