We have a Sebo Turbo upright vac cleaner with tools, which is absolutley brilliant.

We use an Hitachi cylinder cleaner for the cars, but when I tried it out in the house, it killed my back - so I'd go for upright ones every time. Good luck.

upright if you have large open areas of carpet, cylinder if you have smaller areas of carpet and less storage room
Cylinder - more powerful and so much easier to use, for a start you're not pushing all that weight around, just the hose. Also, much easier for getting under beds, settees etc.
Its not for nothing that most schools offices and factorys use cylinders.easier to pull than push.do stairs ...under tables etc.(:)

Thank you everyone.  I've always used cylinders and can't really get on with uprights (too heavy and cumbersome) but my husband is hankering after a dyson....

If you have an upright, you can stick the hose in and voila - you have a cylinder type vacuum which does under cupboards etc.

So why would you ever want just a cylinder?

I have seen people working laboriously across a floor with the tiny little end of a cylinder hose, when I know that easily pushing a wheeled upright would be no effort at all!
