Referencing a TV programme

Does anyone know the correct way of referencing TV programmes when you're writing a research paper for university? I used a BBC News item in a sociology paper and was wondering how to reference it.

Ask your lecturer, he or she may a specific way they want it presented.

To supplement froggequene's answer, I was taught that if I was typing up an assignment I should italicise the source. and if I was handwriting it, as in an exam, it was to be underlined. I would expect that if you were acknowledging a news programme as your source it should be written as name of programme,date.
