Sounds daft but do I need to take some sort of travel plug to the Republic of Ireland, or is it the same three pins we have in the UK??

At the time when the Irish electricity grid was being created Southern Ireland was still part of the UK, so the British system was adopted across the whole of the island. Hence the Republic has inherited our 230V, 50Hz, 3-pin system and no adapter is necessary.
