Earwigs are nocturnal, and will seek out a place to hide in during the day, preferably dark and slightly moist. They've found your bird feeder lid and birdhouse to be suitable. A gardener's ploy for getting rid of them is to fill a flowerpot with straw and place it upside down on top of a cane in the vegetable plot. Earwigs find this is an ideal place to rest up. After a day or two the gardener will set fire to the straw, and then repeat the process.
