Can anyone please point me to a website which lists, free of charge, names and basic details of British service personnel who died in World War 1? Thanks for any help.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission

I think it's www.cwgc.org
http://www.cwgc.org/

the search option is first on the list BUT you need some basic info as the records tend to use initials alot and so home town or parents names can help
As an example if I look for my grand-uncle's record simply quoting his surname I get 90 hits. Spec ifying WWI gets me down to 49 records. Since I know his Initial and the fact he was in the Canadian Army reduces the number to 2. One of these is a George the other is simply GA. Opening up both records gives me background data, in this case next of kin, which confirm that George is mine. I'm lucky in that the surname involved, Hadden, is relatively uncommon. On the other hand we tried to held an AB'er a few weeks back who was looking for someone called Stewart in a Scottish Regiment - it was a very long list.

Thank you both. My search is for a "Quinn", who, I understand, came from Fermanagh in Ireland. Not sure of his first name, so it's going to be a long job! Thanks again, anyway.
They are very helpful at the War Graves Commission. they helped me find which regiment my great uncle was in and where he died, you can also get a picture and plan of the cemetery, my gt uncle is in Etaples in France.
New2quizzes: not sure how much you're going to find out from our suggested website if you've got so little to go on. Any ideas on Service? Army/Navy/Air, age, regiment etc would help. Any chance of finding data tangentially by relationships or documents relating to rest of family - e.g. 1911 Irish Census?
