20 year old overgrown pampas needs cutting back. Unfortunately it's right by the road so burning is out of the question. Do I try hacking back from the outer base and when is the best time?

Cut it right down to about 12". It'll grow again as good as before....i wouldn't worry too much when i did it either...so go for it now.

Or, you can try digging the whole lot up and dividing it into 4. Keep one small plant and sell/give away the other 3. I'd do this in winter though when the plant isn't growing.

Thanks very much for that.  I'll try cutting first - digging up I would imagine is a rather major job, for a digger!
