Pinch and punch, first of the month

Does anyone know where thus saying comes from, and why we have to pinch and punch?

hi - i am not sure where the saying comes from but I have always done "pinch punch" since I was a kid - I am 29 years old and got my husband this morning!.   He had never heard of it before we got together but it has become a bit of a joke between us over the year to see who remembers first - I am winning 6 months to 2 so far this year!!

don't know where this saying came from but seems more of a ryhme pinch, punch, month. the more usual is to say white rabbits three times when you wake up on lst of month to bring   good  luck
