How do satelite phones work? Do you need to get a contract with them? How much are they?

Unless you are a sea going sailor or an explorer of undiscovered lands or live on a very remote part of the world you do not need a satelite phone. They are hugely expensive to buy and use.
Can you really not access a landline or find it impossible to get a signal with a regular mobile phone?

Just curious really. I had a look actually and they are 1k to buy and then you have to pay line rental and a text message is £1.50!
Yes - but they are excellent if you're stuck in the middle of a raging storm in a small boat.
