Adium

When I turned on my Apple Mac and went to Adium, the little circle kept turning, but wouldn't let me access to connect up with my son. It keeps telling me I am 'Offline.' I have tried to quit and go back, but nothing is happening other than to tell me that I'm off line. Is there a way I can fix this, in very easy instructions. I'm not computer literate I'm afraid! I would be grateful for any helpful advice. Many thanks.

Can you gain access to other web pages/sites?

Yes, the internet is fine, I can access to everything, it's just the Adium part that's really iffy. This morning, I tried it again, and it told me that I am now on line, however, I can't access anyone in my contacts. It's really frustrating.
