Hi,

I upload files to my brother's server so that my mates can get them without having to contend with oversize emails.

It works great, BUT can anyone tell me why any ftp program i use can only upload at about 30kb/s when I have a 256k upload speed on my connection?

The server is in collocation (fancy place with super-fast internet connection). At home we are connected on a 2mbit/s download and 256k upload.

Can this 30kb/s upload speed be improved?

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance

256 kbit/sec is the same as approx 32 k/sec so no, you won't be able to improve your upload speed unless you pay more for a better account.

256 kilo BITS per second.

32 kilo Bytes per second.

8 bits in a bite, so 256kbps = 32kBps

Ok thanks muchly.

I really should have known that! Just down to me mis-reading the values or the shorthand the ftp progs are using.

Thanks again.

its something so many people get confused with. really everything should be in bytes, and not bits. its just that bits sounds a lot larger (8 times larger, in fact. ooo genius!), and so the marketing dept. of companies probably favour that.
