Have just discovered that some £20 notes are no longer acceptable in the shops. Apparently it happened fairly recently. I have some I was saving for something. Does anyone know what I do now?

Take them to one of the clearing banks, sharpish - there is a deadline for exchanging them. http://www.telegraph....ger-legal-tender.html

If they won't do it, you will have to contact the Bank of England (this says)

Description:
Deadline was 30th June but I'm sure any high street bank would honour changing them for you.
I was told by the bank (NatWest) this week that there is no problem, and no time limit. Just take them into the bank and they will change them for you.
you can take them to any bank, i work at a shop and we got told a week before , they told us if anyone comes in with one they can take them at any bank and you have 6 months to do so .

This is what it says on the Bank of England site "The older-style £20 notes that show a portrait of Sir Edward Elgar were withdrawn on 30 June.

Most banks, building societies and Post Offices will, for a few months, accept the Elgar £20 notes for deposit to customer accounts and for other customer transactions. However, agreeing to exchange notes is at the discretion of the individual institution."
Unlike some countries there is actually no time limit for exchanging old English notes. A clearing bank or Post Office should be able to change them for you even in 20 years time, though if they refuse you can always post them to the Bank of England.
