This one has been driving me potty for abour 24 hours.
So far I have come up with these answers to nine of the 10 clues - Stow-on-the Wold, not sure about clue 2,Sherborne,Carterton,Langford,Hardy Amies,William Morris,Lechlade,Thames and Severn canal and Fairford.
Am I right in presuming that the river is the Thames?
And what about the four long-distance paths at Stow?
And what is the point of the 10 assorted letters?
Many thanks in advance.

Not doing this, but a few pathways through Stow on the Wold in here ..Monarchs Way, Donnington Way Gloucestershire Way etc..

A river rising 9 miles west from Fairford is likely to be the Thames.

Ah thank you, that's what I was looking for polldancer - a map that showed the footpaths; very useful.
And a thought about the letters - another name for the Thames is the Isis , and you only need two of your letters for that.
