hiya all, my bitch lucy went into her first stage of labour yesterday at 10am, well shes been panting away alllllllllll night and there has been no change, the second stage hasnt started to where the pushing contractions start. Weve been told that this stage is the longest and not to worry as such untill the 2nd stage starts, and that if she doesnt birth pups within a hour of pushing that she is going to need urgent help.
Im still worried though and i dont want to be badgering the vet at all hours with my worries if unneccesary. Can anyone tell me there experiences when there dogs went into labour? i think i just want a little bit of reasurrance that this is ok. Thanks, and i will keep you updated

Hi lotsafun - relax - this first stage can go on a bit - best thing to look out for is any sign of distress - she may be a little while longer before she starts contractions but just keep monitoring her. If you are at all worried don't hesitate to phone your vet for advice. keep her cool and quiet. most whelpings go off safely and without any drama so try not to worry. imo - the last thing you want to hear right now is stories of awful experiences other people have had. good luck and keep us updated.

thanks carmalee, im just feeling a bit anxious because its our first time really, our vet is on standby just incase we need her, but couldnt help but panic a bit because we were told that the first stage can vary from 6-24 hours and shes gone longer than that. Think i will try and have a power nap, been up all night with her lol. Thanks again xxx
I would be worried about uterine inertia, she may not have enough oomph to push the puppies out. If she has actually started labour they may give oxytocin to help things along, but if she has not started it can do more harm than good. Hope you don't need a C Section.
came on this thread hoping for good news as it's fourteen hours since my post. hope things are going well.

hiya all lucy delivered 5 pups this afternoon, 3 girls and 2 boys. There absolutly gorgeous. 3 are black and 2 are white. Of course like most litters there is a runt so we have to keep a closer eye on her as she is no bigger than a mouse and is having a few probs latching on but otherwise all is well :-)
Great news!
good stuff and so pleased to hear all went well - bet you're feeling on top of the world - hope Lucy and her new pups do well - all the best.
