We are in the worst recession for 60yrs and yet we plan to shell out up to £12,000,000 for a visit from the Pontiff.
I respect he heads the Catholic Church and has millions of followers here, but isn't it a bit foolhardy in these austere times?
The Catholic Church, like the Church of England are very rich bodies so why not , they foot the Bill?

I'm not remotely narrow-minded Orcadian, it's steep for the general public to pay for something which is of no interest to a lot of people, and it works both ways, whoever it is - and it's unfortunate that parts of the Catholic Church has had very bad press in recent months. I would feel the same about public expenditure, whoever it was, Obama or anyone. However if GB invited the Pope for a State visit, then we don't have a lot of choice.
