The majority of people asked would say the Labour Party, because its basic ethos is respect for the rights of everyone, regardless of class or creed.

i think everyone would agree that the pendulum has swung far too far the other way - much more than was probably intended in the initial stages, we just have to hope that the ConLibs will just edge it back to the middle, and not swing it back to the radical right with notions that only a certain 'type' of people are worthy of respect, help and support.

Thanx andy and gran, like you i hope that the ConLib's splash a bit of proverbial water on this whole ridiculous charade.
I think you may find it originated in the USA and like many US ideas was adopted with almost religious fervour by those who believe normal peope won't behave well towards others without a barrage of laws and guidelines...However it may serve some purpose in curbing the worst excesses of those those opinions are so abhorrent that the average person finds it hard to believe the person isn't being ironic when expressing them..
Absolutely rowanwitch - and a large number of them seem to post on this Site!
The main driving force was the European human rights act as the Labour party were in power the implemented it.

However as the Torys today have ceased Stop and Search because of Europe it shows no sign of abating anytime soon
