anyone contemplating buying a water butt? wicks have them for £18.61 for a 200 litre one, includes lid and tap, and the base for £5.97. very good value, we've been doing some research on prices and these are the best around at present so we've just been and bought one.

That's nice.
Surely Wickes wouldn't stoop to such low spamming tactics?

it's water butts they're selling, not spam :)
Unless anyone has asked about water butts, it sure looks like spam to me.

in these days of water shortages i was passing on some useful information to anyone contemplating buying a water butt, i wasn't answering a question i was asking one.
have a lovely day.
Even if you get a butt, you need rain to fill it. A dry empty one is a sad additino to the garden.

Personally I let the lawn and plants sort themselves out. The grass is a nice shade of yellow at the moment. And the borders were so thick with what I'm told were weeds (looked like flowers to me) that it took and age to clear them.

we have a number of shrubs in pots which need fairly regular watering, although as we're away a lot we tend to only have plants which won't suffer too much without rain, and we don't have bedding plants either for the same reason.
just been making mortar though, and it was useful to have plenty of water available without having to use mains water and it's that that prompted us to buy a second butt. doesn't take long to fill up when we do get some rain, last nights downpour has provided us with 200 litres to do with as we wish...unlike our neightbour who has been using his hosepipe to water his lawn!
Well done ethandron. I've got one of those, and the smaller slimline one, from Wickes. That price is good. Better than the discounted price I paid - I work for Wickes!
Yes, Old Geezer, you do need rain to fill them and as I have tonight drained both of my water butts I'm hoping for some decent rainfall soon. But when they have water it is better for the garden than tap water which I sadly have to revert to for the moment. I'm on a meter so using tap water costs as well!
Leaving your 'plants' to get on with it is ok, to a point, with mature and established plants. But if you are establishing a new garden, and have a substantial veg plot, you need to look after them in dry conditions.
