Sterilisation - Who should do it? Me or him, your experiences please!

I am just after real life information from people who have had this done. We definitely do not want any more children and I am currently using the contraceptive implant but this has not worked well for me this time and I am almost always on a period which is driving me mad. Hubby is not keen on having the snip in fact he refuses which means its down to me. I have heard that it is more difficult for a woman though and have no idea of the recovery after. I would be grateful if anyone would share their experiences. What exactly does female sterilisation involve, ie the actual operation?

Thank you for the answers, we have discussed this again and he has gone from completely refusing to saying he doesn't want to so maybe this is progress! I will keep working on him, watch this space.
