I have a spare portable I can give you, then you can spend 1500 on something more worthwhile.

You're really going to spend a grand and a half on a telly??
Good luck.
I just bought a Sony 30" LCD TV and it's really great. Couldn't recommend it highly enough. And it was only 970 ! I wouldn't buy a plasma though, the picture quality is not as good and they do not last for very long.
Sorry, my "good luck" was intended to be sincere but now reads as anything but.

Good luck! :-D
Wouldn't buy either at the moment. Wait for price to come down, also both technologies are far from bug free. This is one of the biggest hypes in history. If you need a telly, buy a really cheap one from your local supermarket and look on it as a disposable item. Then save up to buy good one when industry has settled down
I totally agree with storm chaser.  The new High Definition TV's wipe the floor with both LCD and Plasma.

but lcd and plasmas are available as 'hd ready' so how can high definition wipe the floor with them when it is part of them ?!

kinglock, sky will start broadcasting hdtv signals in 2008 but only on some progs so if you want your tv to be reasonably future-proof it is essential to buy one that is 'hd ready'.

also,if you are a gamer the xbox 360 that is out later this year will be hd ready so will be the 1st real opportunity to put an hd tv thru its paces.

We have just purchased a Toshiba LCD 37" TV and we LOVE IT.     We were originally undecided between LCD or Plasma.   After some research, we found out that Plasma TV could be the 'Betamax' of flat panel TV's There is such a lot that could go wrong with them, i.e. keeping them upright on delivery, picture 'burn' etc.   We were told some time ago that if you wanted a BIG screen, plasma was the way to go and if you wanted a very clear picture then it had to be LCD.    We bought this off the internet for 1,400 (complete with stand and a free DVD player) whereas the shop price was about 2000.    We would recommend LCD (and Toshiba) any time.

yeh my toshiba crt tv is excellent...crystal clear picture

I personally think the picture quality of all the top brand LCD TV's i've seen at my local John Lewis are awful compared with my 12 yr old CRT Mitsubishi 25" Black Diamond TV.  I think some peoples annual optician's visit must be overdue.
