Wrong name on summons

This question may have been asked dozens of times, but I can't find an answer. I know someone from overseas who has got a summons for driving with no insurance.
I hope the court throws the book at him, but when he showed me the summons the other day, I saw that his name was spelt wrongly.
His family name was right, but his given name was wrong - I did not say anything to him about this.
Is the summons valid?
I certainly hope so, and I also hope hat he does not get off on a technicality. He is too mean to get a solicitor.
Can anyone give me a speculative answer?
Many thanks

it's still valid. if he doesn't turn up he's liable to find that a warrant is issued for his arrest.

assuming this is in the UK?
