Are hymns copyrighted?

I have just produced an order of service for my grandmother's funeral and it suddenly dawned in me that hymns may be copyrighted? Does any one know if they are and how I should go about this?

Copyright automatically exists in any original works, irrespective of the nature of those works. In the case of hymns, the copyright lasts throughout the life of the composer and for 70 years thereafter:

The school I used to teach at displayed the words of hymns, during school assemblies, by using an overhead projector (rather than by purchasing individual hymn books). It somehow came to the attention of one of the publishers, resulting in the school having to pay compensation (in order to prevent legal action for breach of copyright)
