According to page 38 of their online manual
http://tda.panasonic-...785222/rqt8860-1l.pdf
I can play .avi by selecting DVD drive, then Direct Navigator, which should then present a list of files/titles. Only it doesn't work.
Instead, a symbol appears on the screen, a disc with a diagonal line through it .
I've heard I may need a software (firmware ?) update, how would I go about getting that ? I have e-mailed Panasonic but know from experience they take ages to reply, & then not satisfactorily (in the past I've asked why I can't play DVD-RAM when the spec clearly states the machine's capable, was never explained. I just can't).
Such a shame 'cos all my AV equipment's Panasonic, I swear by their reliability, but these contradictions are starting to frustrate me now. :o(
Off to bed now, after a night shift, but will be back later ...

I've found a couple of site that are claiming the DIVx playback was removed from the UK spec version of that player due to license issues.
Also, according to the appendix, long file names are not supported, so you want to check that all files and folders on the disc conform to the 8.3 DOS standard

Thanks for that.

Have just received a reply from Panasonic (had to be bad, to be that quick !),
"In response, the UK version of the DMR-EX87 is not capable of playing any Divx material copied onto a disc."
Well, that's 2 features I thought I had and haven't. Panasonic slipped WAY down in my estimation now :((
