Any ideas on cause of 3 yr olds coughs/colds??

Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone can think of any reason my son keeps getting ill. I know kids, especially 3 year olds, do quite often get coughs and colds but I'm at my wits end because he always comes back from a weekend at his Dad's with one or the other - or both. Just as he gets rid of it, it's time to go back to Dad's - and lo and behold, another cough or runny nose! He doesn't have any allergies we know of, and his Dad is adamant his house is warm and clean(ish), that he doesn't let him run around without his coat on or anything like that. Sometimes there will be 2 weeks between his weekends and his cough/cold clears up quickly, but the minute he goes to his Dad's he develops one again. His Dad does have a long haired dog, but we never had any problems when we all lived together and my partner has a dog, so I don't see how it can be that. I just wondered if there's something obvious I'm missing?! Any ideas would be appreciated.
Many thanks in advance :)

Blimey! That's a LOT! He's defo not used to it at all and I know plenty of kids who were always ill due to parents smoking, and he's not the sort to air the place out so it's all probably stagnant in there with tobacco. There's no way he'll stop doing it during the week though, even if he says he will, selfish git. :-/
It is an allergy.
Seem to me that you have 3 options:

1) Stop him going to his Dad's at week end.
2) Accept the symptoms on his return.
3) Ask your husband/ex to give him antihistamines at night whilst he is with him for the weekend.
But i'm clever now, my target for my gcses are a pass for ict which i did in year 9, bs in history, phyisics, social eithics and art, and a/a*s in both englishs, maths, biology, chemistry, geography.
and to not smoke in the house, plus get him a hypo-allergenic pillow

Blimey! That's a LOT! I knew plenty of kids who were always ill at school whose parents used to smoke in the house, he will think that because he only does it when he's not there then it won't be the same. He's not the sort to air out the place either, so it's probably all sitting around there, stagnant, until my son turns up and he's breathing it all in. I know he won't stop during the week though, even if he says he will, he's too selfish. :-/
just refuse to let the boy visit, unless his dad takes this seriously and cleans up his act and house, wonder why he doesnt let you in his house, its probably mucky thats why, or hope he isnt growing illegal substances. Its the boy thats suffering and you are aswell, as your making him better by taking him to the doctor, then he goes back there and gets poorly again....has his dad ever taken him to the doctor, has he ever been concerned about the coughing etc, his house cannot be that clean, i feel sorry for the poor child.

Hi all, just an update, and thanks Suzie, I hadn't seen your post. His Dad got a waterproof mattress protector and put it over the mattress and I also asked him to stop smoking in the house 48 hrs prior to him having him and air the place out, which he agreed to. Small insinuations as to whether it was from my house that the illness was coming from, until I forced home the issue that he was getting better when he was at mine and coming home with the cough/cold. All seems hunky dory now, although he has got a cold at the moment - I'm putting that down to nursery and kids being kids - if he comes back again like it then I shall have to have words. His Dad's not that bothered, says kids get ill all the time when they're at nursery etc, which I accept, but it's the timeline that bothers me...fine all week, goes to Dad's, back with a sniffle, runny nose, cough, gets worse - almost like his sinuses are emptying themslves, then by middle week he's fine again...back to Dad's, sniffle, runny nose...you get the idea. I really don't want to stop him going, but I have to face the fact that he's getting ill from being there. His Dad has just moved house, so let's hope that helps. Fingers xed.
Thanks peeps :)
