can you make home beer without co2

I am wanting to make my own bitter. I have all the equipment from a basic starter kit. The instructions say that i just pour the beer into a pressurised barrel. I have a beer keg but it just has a screw top. Will i be able to just pour the beer into this or do i have to buy a co2 cap and co2 bulbs as these proove expensive? will my beer be ok without co2?
